WP4

WP 4 includes the activities that a typical producer – such as Mars – needs to perform in order to adopt Solanyl as packaging material.

The definition of the target market will be determined by a market study, taking into account several factors (e.g. general perception of green products and consumer purchasing power). Parallel to the target market study, it will be determined precisely what brand(s) of Mars shall apply the innovative packaging material (e.g. Mars, Snickers).

Monitoring will take place at several stages of the production and distribution chain and will focus on a number of issues, notably:

  • Developments of market prices of key production materials (inter alia potato starch): These prices can be used to get a better understanding of the price of Solanyl packaging. Together with market data on PP-prices, prognoses of the competitiveness of Solanyl-packaging vis-à-vis traditional solutions can be made.
  • Consumer perception: The main marketing risk underlying the 2GFlexWrap project is the reception by final consumers. Smell, texture and colour of the new packaging can all affect perception of the overall Mars product.
  • Overall production process: A key factor of the competitiveness of Solanyl packaging, is the improvement of the overall efficiency of the production process. Whereas the first batches will be produced in risk-adverse fashion, it is expected that in time inter alia the thickness of the packaging material can be reduced. Such process optimization initiatives reduce overall production costs.
